Zimbabwe ranks as the 22nd most disaster-prone country in Africa according to the World Risk Index, making it especially vulnerable to cyclones, floods, droughts, pandemics, epidemics, and traffic accidents. This is in the context of insufficient funding for the government's national civil protection unit, as well as inadequate early warning systems, preparedness systems, and risk mitigation mechanisms. For a country this vulnerable, better disaster management practices must be promoted, as well as increased investments in prevention, preparedness, resilience and response mechanisms to reduce fatalities, economic losses, and social and psychological damage.
